Aug 29, 2016 8:25 AM

The Baltimore Orioles have signed Tommy Hunter, bringing him back for a sixth straight season.

Hunter was 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 21 games for Cleveland this season. He was in the minors rehabbing a recent back injury when the Indians cut him on Thursday.

Hunter played for Baltimore from 2011-15, going 21-20 with a 4.22 ERA. He said he was thrilled to rejoin the Orioles, adding there were "a lot of smiles, a lot of hugs" when he walked into the clubhouse.

Padres Interested In Re-Signing John Jay

Aug 27, 2016 2:09 PM

The San Diego Padres have interest in re-signing John Jay this offseason.

"It feels great," Jay, asked his reaction, said Friday. "I love San Diego, I love what's going on, I love where the team's headed. Obviously, with free agency, you wait so long to get to this point as a player, you want to see what's out there. But at the same time, I feel very comfortable here. I do like it a lot here, so this is definitely something my wife and I will discuss when we're making those decisions."

"He's a tremendous leader, and he's still a great player," Padres manager Andy Green said. "I'm hopeful he wants to be back, and I'm hopeful we come to some sort of terms where he comes back, but that's an offseason discussion at this point in time. I think all parties involved are pretty open to it."

Jay performed effectively when he was on the field this season. At the time of his injury, he was leading the team in batting average and the National League in doubles.

Terry Collins Acknowledges Mets May Fire Him After Season

Aug 28, 2016 1:30 PM

The New York Mets are still in the race despite a deeply frustrating season.

The Mets are within five games of the NL Wild-Card.

“We had no idea we’d break down like this,’’ Terry Collins said, “None. It’s hard to believe.’’

The Mets reached the World Series last season and had high expectations for 2016.

“They may fire me at the end of the year,’’ Collins told USA TODAY Sports, “but they have supported my ass the entire time I’ve been here. That’s why I’ve got no (complaints). None.

“Whatever happens at the end of the year, I’ll walk out of here with a smile on my face, and get ready for spring training, or get ready to play golf, either one.’’

Report: Two A's Have Clubhouse Altercation

Aug 22, 2016 8:06 AM

A season to forget in Oakland may have taken an unusual turn as two A's players engaged in an altercation that left one injured, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.

A's players Billy Butler and Danny Valencia were involved in some sort of clubhouse spat Friday, according to the report. Since then, Butler has missed Oakland's games Saturday and Sunday with what manager Bob Melvin said was nausea and vomiting.

Valencia, who did not play in Sunday's game, issued a "no comment" about the alleged incident after the Athletics' 4-2 loss to the White Sox, but added, "What happens in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse."
